Birley Fields // Colour Analysis

I have began to analyse colour theories and what moods are created from it. It is key that the colours don't clash, yet still represent particular feelings. I find red too harsh against the other colours and doesn't particularly compliment them. Yellow relates to energy and laughter. Pink creates inner peace, which is necessary for one's happiness. Both blue and green would work will with these colours and boost appropriate feelings.

Birley Fields // Lumiere London

During mid January, London had a light festival called Lumiere. This was spread across central London, consisting of light displays, installations, projections and interactive work. It transformed the city and created a new insight of the surrounding architecture. My favourite piece was by Janet Echelman, consisting of a giant net stretched across Oxford Circus. The installation was interactive, allowing the viewer to connect their phone and select specific colours. Which was then projected onto the net, creating a multitude of colours. The piece was some what calming amongst the hectic buzz of Oxford Street.

The photo on the bottom right was a bottle installation about sustainability. Even though lights use up energy, there is an awareness of sustainability across the show. This is especially relevant as the Birley Fileds Campus has a strong sense of sustainability. I will need to keep this in mind when designing my site-specific piece. The whole trip was inspiring, especially in terms of colour and projections. It has helped provoke new ideas of shape, colour and concept.

Birley Fileds // Design development

I have decided to create and explore structure by the use of Magnetics. These are magnetic ball bearings and sticks, originally made for kids. Both the shadows and structure are interesting and have a nice vibrancy to them. The shapes are interchangeable and shape possibilities are endless.

These are some drawings of the structure that I'd like to develop into a piece.

Birlet Fields // Olafur Eliasson

'One way colour tunnel', 2007'

'One way colour tunnel', 2007

Olifur Eliasson's 'Tunnel' consists of triangular mirrors, that have been installed into a prism structure. The perspective of the colour changes as the viewer walks through it, creating a visual impact. The work evokes emotions and new sensations. It is an interactive piece, which requires the viewer to fully walk through it, before the work is complete. I find the colours extremely engaging due to the vibrancy. If this was to be displayed in Birley, it would become an attraction and would stand out. Adding a colourful piece would be noticed by students, staff and the public.
